Lunar New Year! Year of the FIRE HORSE.

Growing up Vietnamese, we followed so many traditions to invite luck and prosperity. My mom made us clean the house so the year could start fresh. For our family business, she would either close for the holiday or plan a promotion so we’d still have customers.

Food was a big part of the celebration. There were special dishes: dumplings (because they look like little gold), fish for abundance, and long noodles for longevity. We also ate bánh tét (sticky rice with salted pork wrapped in banana leaf)—steamed, sometimes pan-fried with sugar, or served with pickles. There was usually a tray with dried coconut, candied ginger, and sesame balls, too.

The first day is the most important because it sets the energy for the year. (But we celebrate for a month!) We wore new clothes—preferably red—and visited elders. Kids lined up to give blessings, and in return we received lucky money (lì xì).

There are other joyful parts of the celebration: dragon dances, fireworks, and games like “animal chess” and Bingo.

I teach Bella these traditions, but I also pick and choose what we celebrate based on what feels relevant to our energy for the year.
